"She's real fine my 409"
In 1961 Chevrolet introduced its 409 cubic inch V8 in response to Ford’s powerful new 390, starting the manufacturers’ horsepower competition that would extend into the 1970s. Rated at 360 horsepower, it was first available only in the Impala SS, which finally gave Ford a run for its money at the drag strip.
Its popularity and success were such that Chevrolet made the 409 available throughout its full-size lineup the following year. Drag racers turned to the lighter and slightly more aerodynamic Bel Air and Biscayne models, taking advantage of another development, a new, more powerful 409 equipped with dual Carter AFB four-barrel carbs, special solid-lifter cam and lighter valve train. At a magical one horsepower per cubic inch, it was, as Muscle Car Review termed it, “the musclecar world’s first rock star.”
This freshly restored, matching numbers 1962 Bel Air “Bubbletop” is a stunning multiple award winner of exemplary quality, arguably the best in existence. Finished in Tuxedo Black with black wheels, blackwall tires and a Blue interior, it’s the quintessential badboy 409 factory street machine.
